Activity Holidays in Spain

Many people are seeking alternatives to the seaside resort holiday that is centred around lots of sunshine and doing as little as possible except maybe reading a book on the beach or around a swimming pool. Pleasant as that prospect may be, spending two weeks with nothing else on the agenda can become a little monotonous. More and more holidaymakers are looking to combine some of the lazy sunshine holiday concept with a certain amount of activity, and it is here that the area around Gandía and the whole area along the Costa Blanca can really come into its own.

The beautiful mountain scenery that lies almost immediately behind the coastal resorts along the Costa Blanca provide for a whole host of activities that are only now being fully recognised by local towns and businesses as equally valid and attractive reasons to come to this part of Spain. An obvious recreation in the La Safor mountains near Gandía is that of hiking and walking, and there is a wide choice of routes that have been mapped out for the enthusiast, ranging from easy, gentle walks to more strenuous hikes and climbs. Local authorities have started producing maps showing the recommended routes to follow, and these are also signposted along the way to make things even easier and more “user friendly” and less daunting for the first-time hill walker. There is also a hiking information centre in the hills behind Gandía where many of the local routes are centred upon, set in an area designated of special interest and natural beauty. As an extra point of interest, some of the routes also make use of disused railway lines in the area and the hiker will find themselves taking unspoilt and scenic routes between towns and villages, often even walking through former railway tunnels along the way.

If walking and hiking does not appeal, an alternative is cycling and mountain biking. This is a recreation that is hugely popular amongst local people, and it is not hard to see why. Bikes can be hired locally, either as an independent daily or weekly rental, or in the company of a guide who can take the enthusiast along routes in the hills and mountains if a road trip is not what you have in mind. Stunning mountain views are the reward for a steep climb through many of the villages and towns in the area, and then of course there is always the extra reward of the exhilarating downhill trip at the other side! It is very easy to combine a route that takes in a mountain section, followed by a return along the coast and maybe a swim in the sea all in the same trip – the best of everything!

Nature lovers can also indulge themselves along the Costa Blanca by visiting the areas frequented by the many species of birds in the area – both local and (depending on the time of year) migratory. There is a large designated nature reserve of wetlands to the south of Valencia City that will be of particular interest to the bird watcher, and this is home to a great number of species as well as a stopping point for birds that are passing through on their seasonal migrations. In addition to this specific area, the entire stretch of coast provides excellent opportunities for spotting a wide range of birds, including many birds of prey in the mountains. Guided bird watching tours can be arranged by local experts who can take the visitor to the best starting-off points, depending on the particular types of bird that are of particular interest. This can in fact be an excellent way of combining the different activities that the area lends itself to so well – walking through beautiful scenery whilst at the same time spotting varieties of birds and wildlife the visitor is unlikely to encounter at home.

And all this, of course, is available along the Costa Blanca in a climate so very much milder and warmer than what the visitor would probably be used to at home. Indeed, the long mild season that this part of Spain generally experiences makes it perfectly possible – and maybe even preferable – to take a break at a time when the mainstream holiday crowds have either not yet arrived or already returned home. The visitor can then benefit from lower airfares (rather than having to pay the premium normally levied during school holidays), cheaper accommodation costs, and of course a less crowded environment than during the traditional peak season.

Alternatively, if some members of a group want the more traditional high-season holiday activities of sun and sea, this can be combined with the interests of the walker and nature lover all in the same trip. The Costa Blanca and the La Safor region in particular really does have a lot more to offer than first meets the eye.

Autumn and Winter Sunshine The weather is most definitely beginning to cool down in northern Europe now generally, but this year has seen a wonderful, long summer in Spain, and particularly along the Costa Blanca. September and October have so far been unusually warm and settled, and this weather seems here to stay for a while yet.

What better time can there possibly be to leave the grey and cold of impending winter behind and head to the Costa Blanca for what must surely be a bargain break in the sun? Hotels and self-catering accommodation throughout the region are offering great deals on holiday rates, and of course air fares are generally much lower now that the school term has resumed. All in all, a great opportunity for those who can take a holiday at this time of year – all the facilities are here and waiting for the autumn traveller – but with none of the crowds, lower prices and fabulous weather too!

The Costa Blanca has some of the best beaches in Spain – and indeed in the whole of the Mediterranean – but travellers are sometimes deterred from visiting by reports of crowded resorts and rowdy holidaymakers. These resorts and beaches are now at their best and can be enjoyed in relative peace and quiet, giving visitors the impression of what they must have been like in years gone by.

The Costa Blanca has so much more to offer than just holiday resorts and stunning beaches, however, and visitors are often impressed – and surprised – by what they find if they venture away from the better known destinations. Stunning mountain scenery and fascinating castles and attractions are to be found for those that venture slightly inland, with towns such as Xátiva and Guadalest being amongst the most well-known fortifications. Inland lakes and reservoirs are also amongst the surprises that await the intrepid traveller, with a huge choice of scenic drives to choose from.

If driving is not such a preferred option, the Costa Blanca also offers a huge opportunity for the walker and hiker. Designated routes are marked out and signposted in many parts of the region, as well as an indication of estimated journey times and distance. These are to be found not only in the hills and mountains of the Costa Blanca, but interestingly some of these routes encompass old railway tracks and tunnels, which gives an unusual dimension to a walking route and takes the visitor through parts of the region that would otherwise be completely forgotten by now.

If a city break is higher up the list of priorities than a beach or a scenic break, then of course Valencia City has so much to offer the visitor – and the scorching heat of summer has abated, so exploring the city is so much more pleasant in the more gentle warmth of Autumn. Public transport to the city is reliable and inexpensive, so if you are staying in one of the holiday areas along the coast (either north or south), a quick train ride will take you straight to the centre. Valencia has an historic part that is compact and easy to get around on foot and the usual tourist bus can be used to get a quick handle on which sights should be seen in greater detail. There are two routes to ride around, and passengers can hop on and off at any of the stops, and switch between routes at points where they intersect. In stark contrast to the historic centre is the stunning architecture of the City of Arts and Sciences (Ciudad de las Artes y de las Ciencias) – a complex that includes (amongst other facilities) a science museum, the largest aquarium in Europe and an Imax cinema, as well as being a visual delight in its own right. As well as all this, the recently refurbished beach and port areas that include the part of the city featured in the European Grand Prix route are also a recent addition to the “must see” list for the city visitor.

So – now would seem to be the perfect time to visit this beautiful region of Spain. The Costa Blanca and the Comunidad Valenciana have something for everyone, and with accommodation prices offering particularly good value at the moment, airfares past their summer peak pricing structures and a settled outlook of warm and sunny weather, what better time could there be to leave the grey of the north behind and get a last dose of sunshine and warmth, with a Costa Blanca Sunshine Holiday?

Five Years On, and loving it!

This week marks the five year anniversary of our arrival in Gandía as the owners of Villa Florencia – also known now as Gandía Casa Rural. We were originally attracted by the beauty of the area and the prospect of running our own guest house and bed and breakfast business on the Costa Blanca and that initial appeal still holds good today, five years on.

Much has changed in that time, both in the way we run the business, as well as in the wider world generally, but we certainly have no regrets about making the move to Gandía and changing our lives so radically. At the beginning of our time here, we put in a great deal of effort in improving the house and grounds, as well as constructing a new frontage to the road and an adequate guest parking area. A reconstruction of the swimming pool was undertaken at the same time, and glass doors enclosing the upper terrace provided a spectacular dining and breakfast space.

A steady flow of guests has followed, and we have always been pleasantly surprised by the mix of nationalities that has visited us and the different reasons for people seeking out this corner of Spain. The initial surge of property hunters reduced in line with the general crisis and recession that hit Europe as a whole, but we were pleased that – as well as maintaining our level of northern European holidaymakers – we were being visited by an ever increasing number of Spanish guests. They often wanted to spend their holidays in Gandía in an area of peace and tranquillity whilst at the same time being within easy striking distance of Playa de Gandía and all the facilities that are on offer there. Even the attractions of Benidorm are within a very reasonable driving distance, as well as the sights of Valencia City itself.

So, five years on we find ourselves now catering for a much more Spanish clientele than previously, but of course we are still keen to make everyone who arrives at our door most welcome. We are able to be very flexible in the accommodation and service that we offer to our guests, ranging from the traditional Bed and Breakfast with the option of an evening meal service as well, to the possibility of renting the whole house on a self-catering basis – either for weekend house parties or for extended families to holiday together for a week or longer at a time. The self-catering apartment (which can hold four people in comfort) is another option that we offer as well, and again it is available to rent either by the week or for longer periods for those that want to spend a few weeks away from the cold and grey of a northern European winter.

We embarked on a complete change in our lives five years ago, and still feel that the life that we lead here on the outskirts of the town of Gandía is one that we are very privileged to enjoy. The surroundings here are some of the most beautiful that you could ever wish to live amongst, and it is a constant source of surprise to see who will be our next guests, so moving here is a decision that we have no regrets about at all, and we look forward to the next five years and meeting even more interesting people who arrive at our door.

We provide guided Bird Watching Tours throughout Eastern Spain, encompassing Valencia, Alicante and Castilla de la Mancha. This area is blessed with an incredibly diverse range of habitats and excellent birding sites, many of which are virtually unknown! We cater for all levels of bird enthusiasts and provide a bespoke guiding service at very reasonable cost. Our local knowledge can ensure that our clients can make the absolute most of their time in Spain by depending on us to take them to the very best sites.

We offer full day and half day tours and can cater for a maximum group size of 8 people. There is no minimum group size – we can cater for families, couples or even individuals who maybe in Spain for a family holiday and wish to escape the beach for a day out birding!

The diverse habitat of our area provides fantastic opportunities for a wide range of bird watching trips. These include coastal wetlands, high steppe, lakes and lagoons, Mediterranean scrub, and mountains and crags. Therefore, the variety of species is truly incredible.

Our style is very informal and relaxed. We have a wide range of half day and full day itineraries but we place your shes above sticking rigorously to a fixed schedule! Our priority is quality time and enjoyment rather than rushing around simply trying to maximise the tick-list!

We try to ensure that our clients get the very most from our trips by listening to their needs. Should you, as an experienced birder have specific ´target birds´that you wish to see, we will do our very best to achieve such. On the other hand, if you are new to Bird Watching and would like to see the birdlife that Spain has to offer whilst learning more in a very relaxed environment, we are equally willing and able to provide a service for you.

Binoculars

Where required, binoculars are available for hire at €5 per trip (must be requested when booking but payable on the day). Depending on the location, a telescope is usually provided by the Guide for use by all at no extra cost.

Children

Children are made very welcome but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and child-seats or booster seats must be provided by the parent or guardian. Fact sheets can be provided at no extra cost for children who would like to learn more about the key species that can be found here in our region.

Transport

Transport is usually provided in the form of our fully insured, highly maintained 9-seater minibus. This is fully equipped with seatbelts and air conditioning (and usually a coolbox full of cold drinks!).

In order to maintain effective and manageable groups our tours are limited to a maximum of 8 participants. This enables everyone a good opportunity to see the birds. We rotate seating arrangements in the bus so that everyone has a front seat at some stage. We never forget that it is your holiday and we try our best to give you a wonderful experience and some long lasting memories.

Valencian Coastal Wetlands – Full Day.

Perhaps the premium trip for those wishing to discover the huge range of Mediterranean bird species that the Valencian coastline has to offer. To make the absolute best of this trip, some walking is necessary and although the distance is approaching 7km, all of it is on good paths and the entire route is flat.

This virtually undiscovered gem of a site is worth a visit at absolutely any time of year. Breeding species include Collared Pratincole, Avocet, Glossy Ibis, Purple Gallinule, Squacco Heron plus all the Western Mediterranean species of Egrets. Marbled Teal, Red Crested Pochard and White Headed Duck are among the wildfowl on offer.

Mountains & Marshes – Full Day.

This trip takes advantage of the diverse range of habitats that the Valencian region has to offer, and takes in stunning mountain valleys, reservoirs and coastal wetlands.

The morning is spent exploring the beautiful mountains and valleys around Vall de Albaida. The scenery alone makes this a worthwhile trip, but the bird life on display is simply superb. Individual species are too numerous to list, although highlights could include Sardinian Warbler, Cirl Bunting, Rock Bunting, Iberian Grey Shrike and Hoopoe. During the “summer” months we can also expect to see Golden Oriole, Nightingale, Blue Rock Thrush and Alpine Swift. Raptors are always possible, including Griffon Vulture and Golden Eagle.

The afternoon is spent exploring coastal marsh, a local hotspot that can turn up surprises at all times of year. Highlights often include Osprey, Marsh Harrier, Squacco Heron, Purple Heron, Little Bittern and Purple Gallinule.

This trip can easily be adapted to the capability of the group, but can easily be enjoyed without the need for strenuous activity. The walking is short and mainly on level wide tracks. Be sure to bring a camera!

Steppe & Lagoons – Full Day.

This trip provides a complete change in terms of habitat, and takes us up into the high plains of Albacete. One of the lesser known parts of Eastern Spain, this fascinating area comprises seemingly endless open spaces where Great Bustards proudly roam (Europe´s heaviest flying bird weighing up to 16kg!).

Black Bellied Sand Grouse, Calandra Larks, Crested Larks, Rock Sparrow and Bee Eaters can often be seen, as can many raptors including Booted Eagle, Buzzard, Marsh Harrier and Merlin.

The area also includes a number of lagoons where Flamingo can often be seen in good numbers. Other regular species include Little Ringed Plovers, Black Winged Stilt, Wood Sandpiper, Avocet and Black Necked Grebe. Wildfowl can include White Headed Duck, Shelduck, Red Crested Pochard, Shoveler and Gadwall.

Like most of our trips, this can be adapted to suit the physical capability of the group. However, it can be enjoyed with minimal physical effort. A superb day out to an area that offers a unique habitat range.

Mountain Bird Life – Half Day.

This half day trip visits spectacular mountain scenery, where the star species is undoubtedly the magnificent Griffon Vulture. With a wingspan of over 2 metres, they make for an unforgetable sight.

This trip can also provide the opportunity to enjoy other mountain species such as Black Redstart, Blue Rock Thrush, Sardinian Warbler, Orphean Warbler, Crag Martin and Raven.

Some walking is required including a very short section of steep footpath. However, the distance is short and most of the time will be spent watching rather than walking!

This half day trip can be combined with other sites to form a full day trip if required.

Google Pagerank update - 4 August 2011

Google went nearly 5 months without updating our visual page rank. Then they did a release on June 27th 2011, then updated that update around July 18th 2011 to take corrective actions as they apparently messed up and provided twitter with a PR0! and Google itself with only a PR9!

Now August 4th 2011 I am seeing another Page Rank Update.

I think generally people have become somewhat disenchanted with Google Page Rank, and there are so many more reliable ways to determine the overall value of a website these days, but many people hang their hats on what their Page Rank is, or is not.

Coffee, Coffee, Coffee

Coffee in Spain seems to be a ubiquitous drink and one that can be enjoyed virtually wherever you go. Better still, the coffee in Spain is invariably delicious. Certainly, there can few greater pleasures than sitting outside a Spanish bar with a sparkling blue sea in front of you whilst having a sociable cup of coffee. This is bliss - particularly when combined with the fact that rarely in Spain are you ever rushed. So, you can sit with a single coffee (costing around 1.40 Euros) and relax in a way that is quite impossible within the frenetic atmosphere of Northern Europe or the US.

The thing is that, away from the big cities, Spanish life is slower and more relaxed than in Northern Europe and the US. In provincial areas, the word ‘tranquil’ (calm) seems to appear in most conversations and slow, long lunches and relaxed coffee breaks are a way of life. Certainly, I have never been hurried over a coffee in Spain and frequently I have enjoyed every minute of reading right through a newspaper having had a single cup of coffee. To have had more was not expected and, to be honest, not needed.

After all, coffee in Spain is something to be savoured. To have a proper espresso machine is de rigeuer for any bar, café, restaurant or hotel and to be served over-brewed filter coffee or (Heaven forbid) instant coffee would be to insult the taste buds of any self-respecting Spaniard. In fact, after eight years in Spain, I have only ever been offered a cup of coffee in Spain at a Spaniard’s home twice. On both occasions, they had their own espresso coffee machines and I suspect that if this was not the case then no coffee would have been offered. When it comes to espresso coffee machines they are available for the home if you are an aficionado of great coffee – although I prefer not to have the hassle and go out for a coffee. In terms of commercial espresso coffee machines, these are available from a number of coffee machine manufacturers.

Living in Spain, I am biased (obviously) and would recommend a look at the espresso coffee machines made by Crem International in Gandia, Valencia Province whose brand name Expobar you will have seen on many espresso coffee machines in cafes and bars around Spain. These have a good reputation as being both robust and reliable.

The Plight of the Spanish Greyhound

I have just been approached by a very high profile Spanish organization that is campaigning against animal cruelty in Spain. This, of course, should be of interest to any right minded person and I hope that you will do your ‘bit’ to support them - and the many other organisations in Spain that do so much to help injured or homeless animals here.

Certainly, there is animal cruelty in Spain - just as there is in any country in the world. However, it would be quite wrong to think that all Spaniards are cruel to their animals. That is far from the case and you have only to attend a local festival like San Antonio to see that the vast majority of Spaniards love their pets and care for their animals.

However, there are enough Spaniards around who are cruel to their animals to give cause for genuine concern. Yoquierogalgos (I love greyhounds) is a Spanish organization that highlights monstrous cruelty in Spain against greyhounds – focusing on these lovely dogs to highlight the problems of animal cruelty in Spain.

Certainly, Yoquierogalgos illustrate some stomach churning stories to illustrate cruelty to animals in Spain. For example, some 50,000 (!!!) greyhounds are dumped every year after the end of the greyhound racing season in January/February. These dogs have a racing life of two years and then are, quite simply, disposed by their owners, like rancid meat.

Meanwhile, the training of greyhounds is often brutal with tying a greyhound to a car for ‘training’ (‘el galgo a motor’) actually still legal in Andalusia. In many cases, the dogs concerned die, are run over or go blind from the effort involved in keeping up with an accelerating vehicle.

Needless to say, illicit dog fighting in Spain continues in many areas of the country. This is a particularly revolting sport that has disappeared from most civilized countries long ago. Tragically, this is not the case here and many large family dogs are stolen only because they can be used as bait and practice for fighting dogs. Often the stolen dogs used for ‘practice’ have their teeth removed before being forced to fight, so that they do not damage the valuable fighting dogs. Disgusting.

Part of the problem is that the sanctions for animal cruelty in Spain are laughable. At best, if someone is found guilty of cruelty to animals in Spain they will receive a fine of 100 Euros! There are no prison sentences available to the courts to punish cruelty to animals and often the Spanish police are reluctant to take action.

Yoquierogalgos told me of a recent case where a man murdered and tortured a puppy. This was recorded on video, posted on the Internet and showed the dog being tortured for 29-minutes - during which the poor creature was burned, had its limbs broken and objects inserted inside it. After months of investigation (following numerous complaints) the culprit was found and identified as a Treasury official in Badajoz who already had a history of torturing dogs. He was issued with a fine…

As Yoquierogalgos say: “Unfortunately, this is the reality in Spain. If nothing happens to a psychopath like the man in Badajoz then what will exists to punish hunters, gypsies and dog breeders who are also guilty of continuous and terrible cruelty?”

Clearly, something needs to be done and a start would be to have realistic punishments in place for anyone guilty of cruelty to animals in Spain. This is certainly something for which Yoquierogalgos are campaigning. They are also, of course, trying hard to change the culture of cruelty that clearly exists in some sections of Spanish society. Needless to say, this is the long range solution but perhaps the most important one to tackle and one that you can help with - by changing the opinions of those who feel animal cruelty (anywhere in the world) is acceptable.

Interestingly, Yoquierogalgos have some really powerful support for their campaign against animal cruelty in Spain and have enlisted some of the biggest ‘names’in Spain to help them. These include people like Malu, Alexandra Jiménez, Rocío Madrid, Sandra Barneda, Mariano Alameda and Monica Naranjo amongst many others. To put these people in perspective Malu is a major pop star, Rocío Madrid is a TV presenter and actress, Sandra Barneda is a nationally known journalist and TV presenter, Mariano Alameda is a famous actor and Monica Naranjo is a very well known multi-million record selling star.

So, do have a look at the site of Yoquierogalgos (it is also in English) and give them your support. But, beware - some images are very disturbing. Finally, if you have time, do not forget your local animal sanctuaries (near me in Valencia Province it is SPAMA ) many of whom do wonderful work.

Spanish Debt Crisis

So, what is there to say about debt in Spain – or, at least, what can we believe and what really is the situation? Frankly, I really do not know and I am not at all sure that the recent stress tests of EU banks provide much of a clue. Certainly, when the ‘same’ banking stress tests were undertaken last year no-one in their right mind believed that they were rigorous or properly reflected the truth. This year, of the eight European banks that failed the stress tests set by the European Banking Authority five were Spanish banks and were (predicatably) CaixaCatalunya, Unnim, Caja de Ahorros del Mediterráneo, Grupo Caja 3 and bank Banco Pastor. But are these the only Spanish banks ‘at risk’ and does it mean that all is well elsewhere with the Spanish economy and the Spanish banking system – or is Spanish debt so high that it is unsupportable? Certainly, I am concerned not least because I do not think the full truth has been told by a long way. Indeed, as I pointed out in a recent Post (Are the Autonomous Regions of Spain bankrupt?) Spanish debt is rampant wherever you look. Indeed, as good an example of debt in Spain as any you are likely to find relates to my own town of Gandia. This, evidently, has a debt of 180 million Euros. Now, with a population of 80,000 people that equates to a massive ‘debt’ of some 225,000 Euros for every man, woman and child in the town! Meanwhile, Valencia City (from memory) has a debt of some 890 million Euros equating to some 98,000 Euros of debt per person there. My goodness – these are huge figures, by anyone’s standards, and are probably, more or less representative of towns and villages right across Spain. Of course, the really shocking thing about the monstrous scale of the debt in Spain is that the debt has come after the biggest boom in Spain since galleons were bringing tons of gold over to the country from Central and South America in the 16^th Century. Logically, the country should have a surplus but the extreme reverse is true, although I doubt anyone who has been living in Spain over the past few years is surprised. Indeed, one of the really striking things over the last ten years is the scale of spending on public projects in Spain that has been undertaken by local villages, town and city governments. They have always seemed profligate - and so it has turned out to be. Unfortunately, much of the spending has not always seemed to make sense and there are good grounds for thinking that much had been initiated corruptly to benefit local politicians and businessman. This may be the reason why some 86% of Spaniards, in a recent poll, believed that corruption in Spain was bad/very bad! Mind you, Spain is not alone in having huge debt. The US public debt is enormous as well and stands at $14,291, 686, 094, 756 (and rising rapidly) at the time of writing. This equates to some $46,543 per person (the population of the US is 311,792, 612) or 129,838 per tax payer! So, Spain is not alone although in being saddled with vast debts. The trouble is that I suspect the nature of the Spanish economy makes it more vulnerable than the US or the UK with any regeneration for Spain that much more difficult to achieve. My point, unfortunately, is that all the evidence appears to suggest that this ghastly recession is far from over and that property prices (for example) in Spain are a long way off stabalising with high unemployment and hard times set to continue – damn it! Incidentally, if you are interested in debt statistics then do have a look at the US National Debt Clock or the World Debt Clock (but avert your eyes, if you are British, from the UK statistics!).

Bread, pastries & cakes from Spain

PASTRY IN SPAIN

Have you bought any cakes in Spain from a supermarket – as opposed to a corner shop? What about bread rolls and pastries?

I know, I know that is a dumb question – pretty much all of us have, even if we have just come over to Spain for a brief holiday!

I ask this because if you have bought a cake, pastry or bread in Spain from a supermarket then you will almost certainly have bought one from the biggest producer of bread and pastries in Spain – a company called Dulcesol. This is located close to where I live (Gandia in Valencia Province) and is one of those great success stories that always take my breath away. In the case of Dulcesol this is because it is a family business that, in fifty years, has gone from a tiny bakery in a little coastal pueblo to a national Spanish business producing over 115,000 tons of bread, pastries and cakes a year.

BREAD IN SPAIN - THE START OF THE PROCESS

Can you imagine – 115,000 tons of inherently light weight produce created and sold every year! The quantities are simply breathtaking.

Indeed, Dulcesol produce some 1,000 different varieties of products with an astonishing 20,000 bread rolls, 1,900 apple pies, 25,000 chocolate donuts and 9,000 muffins (amongst many other products) coming of their production lines every hour – with production varying between 16 to 24 hours a day, 6/7 days a week.

Amazing.

CAKES IN SPAIN - FILLING

In any event, a few days ago I was invited by the owner of Dulcesol, Juanjo, to see what happens in one of their two factories and the accompanying pictures may interest you if you have never seen a bread and pastry factory in full production.

CAKES IN SPAIN - GOING FOR THEIR TOPPING

Certainly, one of the most striking things about the Dulcesol factory that I went to in Villalonga is the sheer scale of everything . The factory is simply enormous with both Dulcesol factories (one in Gandia, one in Villalonga) taking up some 80,000m2 of space and employing 1,100 people – making Dulcesol the biggest private sector employer in the area. Meanwhile, of course, indirectly Dulcesol creates employment for hundreds more people involved in the transport and production of raw and finished good for the factory.

Of course, the most extraordinary thing to see is the production lines which can extend (if they were in a straight line) for around 250 metres in length. Quite literally, at one end raw materials enter the system (normally pastry) to appear at the far end as cakes or bread wrapped and sealed in the bags in which they will appear on a supermarket’s shelves.

BREAD IN SPAIN - THOUSANDS OF ROLLS PRODUCED EVERY HOUR

The production lines are nothing if not expensive to construct and give some idea of the complexity of the business and the huge investment required to keep a factory like this productive in an extremely competitive industry. Indeed, I was shown a new production line being erected which Juanjo said would cost some 12 million euros by the time it was finished.

All of the design of any production lines is undertaken by Dulcesol who believe that their production lines are unique in the world of cake and bread manufacture. This not just about their sophistication and ability to produce different products but also for ability to adapt the new production lines to new orders with the minimum lost time and productivity. According to Juanjo, a new production line can take 6 months to think about, 6 months to design and around a year to a year and half to construct and get working. Quite an investment, each time…

CAKES IN SPAIN - MUFFINS

Indeed, Juanjo stated that Dulcesol invest some 20-25 million euros a year in keeping the business up to date and on improvements – such as on a very impressive, state of the art, storage and warehousing facility and an astonishingly sophisticated new production line being constructed whilst I was there.

Interestingly, as Dulcesol become ever more sophisticated their production has gone up – whilst their employee numbers have actually reduced. In 2007 they produced 85,000 tons of produce with something like 1,500 employees compared to last year’s 115,000 tons with only 1,100 employees. Obviously, this has a helpful impact upon their overheads with 11% of their costs being attributable to staff and some 60% to materials.

If you have not seen the name of Dulcesol on the packets of cakes or bread in Spain then this is because Dulcesol do a lot of ‘white label’ production – meaning that they act as producers of bread, cakes and pastries in Spain for many other brands. So, their own produce is packaged at their factory in packaging that has the name and label of the retail supermarket or business concerned.

However, that does not mean that you will not see the name Dulcesol on packets of bread or pastries in Spain. You will not least on what Juanjo said was a spectacularly successful response to the economic crisis. Cleverly, Dulcesol produce some 70 different items that are for sale for only 1 euro. These are extremely popular and show how sharp and responsive Dulcesol is with regard to its marketing.

In fact, Dulcesol do not just produce cakes, pastries and bread for Spain alone. They are now pushing into the North African marketplace and also into France. So, the company is still growing and determined to convert the rest of Europe to Spanish bread and cakes!

Well, Juanjo put Dulcesol’s success down to a number of factors, all equally important – a great diversification of products, good quality control and production, an excellent distribution network and fine staff.

Just before 11 am this morning The helicopter was in the air above the mountain village of Frigiliana, which Dutch tourist last Friday, was last spotted. The police are now out of crime and examine each track. Besides the national and regional media also pay local media extensive attention to the disappearance. On the initiative of the small Dutch community in Nerja (where Mary-Anne Goossens stayed for a short break), there are now also calls for tips posted on radio stations as well

Holland, June 22, 2011 – Since Thursday 16 June 2011, a Dutch tourist Mary-Anne Goossens has been missing. Mary-Anne left Tuesday June 14 for a 10-day holiday-trip to Málaga. Last contact with Mary-Anne was Thursday night (16 June) with her children by text message. Since then, nobody has seen or spoken to Mary-Anne. On that Thursday she checked into Hotel Bajamar in Nerja, Málaga. This was also the last moment her credit card and debit card have been used. The hotel room is prepaid through to Thursday, June 22. Her luggage is still in her hotel room but the bed has not been used for days.

Mary-Anne left Holland in good mental and physical state. Her family is deeply concerned since she is very keen on keeping contact on a daily basis. Right now, all official agencies in Spain and Holland are actively warned and have all details. Today, Wednesday 22 June, her son and ex-husband & close friend Johan Korten are flying to Malaga to start a local search. In Holland her daughter Jantje Korten, family and friends are doing the best they can to find Mary Anne.

NERJA – De Guardia Civil begint maandagochtend om 08.00 uur een zoektocht met honden en helikopters naar de vermiste Nederlandse toeriste Mary-Anne Goossens (48) uit Stamproy. Waar de Guardia het accent legt van de zoektocht is nog niet precies bekend. De omgeving van Frigiliana is door vrijwilligers al dagen uitgekamd, maar in het onherbergzame gebied rond het dorp is het zoeken naar een speld in een hooiberg. Speurhonden en infrarood-camera’s vanuit helikopters worden morgen ingezet om ook in die gebieden te kunnen zoeken. Tevens wordt het team van politieagenten uitgebreid. Vandaag houdt de Guardia Civil zich bezig met een zoektocht in en rondom de rivieren in het gebied.
Ondertussen blijven familie en vrienden van de vrouw, in samenwerking met een groep Nederlanders die woonachtig zijn in het gebied rond Nerja, doorzoeken. Ook vakantiegangers helpen daarbij. Sinds vrijdagochtend 17 juni wordt de Limburgse Mary-Anne Goossens vermist. Mary-Anne is vorige week dinsdag 14 juni vertrokken voor een 10-daagse vakantie naar Malaga (Spanje). Het laatste contact heeft zij donderdagavond per sms gehad met haar kinderen. Mary-Anne heeft op donderdag 16 juni ’s middags ingecheckt in hotel Bajamar in Nerja. Haar creditcard en pinpas zijn op die dag voor het laatst gebruikt. Donderdagavond heeft ze in het hotel geslapen. Vrijdag 17 juni is zij ’s ochtends naar het nabijgelegen plaatje Frigiliana gegaan. Vrijdag rond 13.00 uur is ze voor het laatst gesignaleerd in een winkeltje en sindsdien ontbreekt ieder spoor van Mary-Anne. Vanaf vrijdag 17 juni heeft ze ook niet meer in het hotel geslapen. Vrijdag 24 juni zou ze teruggevlogen zijn naar Nederland. Helaas zat Mary-Anne niet in het vliegtuig.

So, what is living in Spain really like for an expat?

That’s an interesting question but one thing it is NOT is a longer version of your annual two week holiday on a Benidorm or Marbella beach. It is exciting, frustrating, fun, too hot, too cold, too lonely, too busy, too quiet, too noisy. In short it can be all things to all people and at this stage we have no idea whether you will enjoy or even survive the challenge of living in a foreign climate instead of just spending a week or two while spending your holidays in Spain.

What we do know is that your chances of success are increased massively if you have done your homework in advance. What do we mean by that?

Spain has moved forward to a tremendous pace over the past thirty years and from the sleepy, agrarian state of just a few years ago a dynamic, post-industrialised society has developed. These changes have been seen most clearly on the Costas where you will now find a cosmopolitan lifestyle with prices not markedly different to Northern Europe for many products and services. This region is one that has seen a steady rise in tourism, followed by a rise in hotels, resorts and timeshares, which may actually provide a budget friendly means for accommodations for those wishing to explore the region. Apricot jam

Jam creamy consistency, which suggests small pieces. A smell of ripe fruit and full flavor, with a slight sour note, make it perfect for spreading on bread for breakfast, but also as a basis for a good risotto.

Little Wild Plum Jam

Thick and smooth jam with an intense aroma of wild plums, with a prevalence of tannic notes. The taste turns sour and strong, but reveals to the palate a pleasantly sweet aftertaste. Excellent in combination with pecorino sardo, crushed ice drink and hard cheeses. During dessert, perfectly mixed with the dough for pies and donuts.

Raspberry jam

Jam consistency rich, with pulp of the whole fruit. With an intense aroma, full of fresh fruit, to the palate reveals its sweet and strong taste. A perfect accompaniment to the "feathered" as the pheasant, or in desserts directly in the mix.

Blackberry jam

Jam soft texture, with the presence of small pieces. To the nose it appears full, with a hint of ripe fruit, which is revealed on the palate with a sweet, intense, slightly bitter aftertaste. It's great to spread on bread for breakfast, or to enrich the mixture of sweet and tart.

Mulberry jam

Jam derived from delicate cooking of dried fruit which is leaved entirely in its own juice. So Remains all the consistency of the whole fruit, both in extremely intense aroma, full, with rich notes of undergrowth, with a sweet and strong taste. It's a great accompaniment to ricotta cheese, hot cakes, or to taste yogurt and ice cream

Plum jam

Soft, creamy jam, with flesh of plums, to the palate reveals the texture of the pieces of the fruit. The bouquet is intense, warm, with a delicate aroma of red fruits, the plum jam is fresh, smooth flavor with a slight bitter aftertaste. Excellent in breakfast, classic spreads on toast.

White figs jam or “Figs of the Lady“

Jam made from ancient varieties of figs. The extreme sensitivity of the mature fruit is revealed in the soft texture. The piece of fig, with its typical grains, and light fragrance gives a the sweet taste very intense and persistent. Excellent with white meat and delicate veined cheeses like soft blue cheese.

Redcurrant jam

Jam solid and consistent, with the presence of whole fruit. The intense aroma with notes of undergrowth, a typical prelude to the rich flavor of the fruit with a bitter and sour aftertaste. The combination is perfect with all the game, the boar in particular, and to accompany pate, foie gras, or aged cheeses, such as the typical cheese "drunk".

Pear “Angelica“ jam

Jam soft texture and creamy made from the ancient variety of pear “Angelica“, very intense and rich aroma that makes it ideal as an accompaniment to cakes and pastries made with cheese, great on grilled or boiled white meats and boiled vegetables with chicken and capon. Alone, for breakfast.

Gooseberry jam

Jam consistency thick and solid, that gives a glimpse of crushed berries. The perfume is intense and ripe and leads to hints of berries, leaving a long note of grape strawberry. The taste slightly bitter and acidic, making it excellent as an accompaniment to a hard semi-mature cheeses such as pecorino, or used directly in cooking white meat.

Te propongo una cosa: envía un correo electrónico a post@posterous.com y añádele algo de texto, adjunta una foto, un MP3 o un fichero. Felicidades, ya tienes una cuenta creada en Posterous, te llegará un e-mail de confirmación.

Posterous es una herramienta para bloguear que me parece simplemente genial y de lo más innovador que existe ahora mismo en Internet, y ya sólo con ver el registro se puede ver, pero va mucho más allá.

¿Para qué sirve Posterous?

Pues sirve para bloguear, como pueden servir WordPress o Blogger. Aunque no sea idéntico en funcionalidades, la ventaja de Posterous es su inmediatez, pues todo lo que enviemos por correo electrónico saldrá publicado al momento.

Por tanto, creo que se podría decir que Posterous es un híbrido de Twitter y WordPress, cogiendo lo mejor de cada uno: la inmediatez y la posibilidad de hacer un contenido extenso. No obstante hay gente que lo ha convertido en su blog personal, caso de Posterous.es

Posterous me gusta mucho para publicar ideas y cosas que voy encontrando en la calle, cosas que me van pasando a nivel personal y que puede ver gente cercana a mí.

¿Debería abrirme un Posterous?

En primer lugar lo que digo siempre: no pierdes nada por probarlo, a mi me gusta mucho más que otras herramientas como Tumblr pues están hechas más para geeks y gente más metida en redes sociales.

Además, Posterous permite la publicación por grupos y puede ser ideal para que varios miembros de una empresa o de una familia desde sus cuentas de e-mail vayan publicando contenido en un mismo lugar: blog colaborativo, información sobre algún evento familiar, fotos de las vacaciones, etc…

¿Qué otras características destacan?

En Posterous puedes hacer autopost: republicar automáticamente contenido de tu Posterous a varias redes sociales; es compatible con Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr y casi todas las herramientas que te puedas imaginar.

Posterous también ha cogido cosas del blogging y es compatible con Google Analytics y con Feedburner, para así poder llevar un control completo de lo que sucede. También puedes hacer que esté alojado en tu propio dominio.

Está genial porque según el contenido que mandes, Posterous adapta la manera de mostrarlo: si mandas un MP3 de archivo adjunto mostrará un reproductor para oírlo, así como con una película o grabación del móvil, fotos y documentos de texto. Fantástico.

When a new social networking web site or blog provider starts rolling out their services, there is always a high risk that it will simply be a flash in the pan. Posterous has much more promise than this. Yes, it is a blogging platform, but more on the level of being a content distribution service for social media marketing. Think of what Tube Mogul does, but change that into a more interactive process that includes social networking websites such as Twitter, Facebook, and other blog providers such as Facebook, TypePad, and even self-hosted Movable Type blogs.

Imagine Having All Your Social Media Efforts Fully Integrated and Being Able to Publish Everywhere Instantly…

That’s what’s at stake. So, let’s say that I have a Posterous account. I would like to post a blog. There are two ways that I can do this. I can either use the web interface in my blogs admin panel, or I can simply e-mail a blog post no matter where I am, and this will be published. I can also attach images to this e-mail, along with video and audio, however this is only the beginning of the process. I can also notify Posterous what other accounts I have elsewhere, and Posterous will automatically update statuses on Twitter, and Facebook. Not only that, but I can also have my blog posts re-posted at other hosted blogs such as WordPress and Type Pad, and even update status messages on YouTube, send images to Picasa, and much more. Currently there are 28 services that are supported, plus the rare feature that allows updating on a custom page that you have created on FaceBook. Normally this is a difficult process, however Posterous have developed an application for doing just this, and it is literally within the click of a button.

Why are so many people talking so highly about Posterous? From an SEO standpoint, if you have a product that you are trying to sell, social media is one of the best-selling tools that you can possibly use. Social Media is a means of creating an online persona that the consumer can relate to, and ask questions. You can also ask the consumer questions, which will in turn result in more interaction. This can be a lengthy process, and a lot of SEO Experts do tend to outsource their social media interactions to other people. Posterous allows for at least 50% of this interaction to be centralized. You write a blog post, all of your followers on Twitter are notified, as are the followers of your other blog on WordPress, and the same for those who are fans of your page on Facebook. This of course can also result in the domination of the front page of your keyword results in Google if you effectively use the right keywords, and can generate valuable back links as well.

Of course, there are many blogging platforms out there such as WordPress, TypePad, Moveable Type, Blogger, and many more. Feedburner is also supported. If you have people who would like to contribute to your Posterous blog, you can also sign them up as a contributor, which will allow them to post as well via e-mail.
